In Residency: Dalila Gonçalves

Within a practice with a strong procedural load, Dalila Gonçalves addresses different lines of interest: the idea of ​​time as a medium and a metaphor, rescue, the obsolete, the experimental path between industry and organic, between serial production and artisanal production.

“Soprar em seco” is a show presenting the results of a month-long residency at Fundación MARSO. Using her dissecting process, her discovery of objects and materials––all its layers until she can see them from within––material brought form Portugal are set into dialogue with others found and manufactured in the city. The term soprar em seco–– dry blowing––conveys a feeling of impossibility, of suspension, at the same time, a dry blow leads to something precise and direct. The hoop has frozen stretched out, and has become the horse’s mane again; we cannot blow the trumpet caught in a hand that sounds low on sandpaper used in some woodshop. While feathers and pine cod, in a pause, intertwine to assist (cod, as the artist’s grandmother called it, was formerly used to pass the time and entertain children in her town in Portugal).

In other pieces the materials tell their own stories: the sandpaper has been separated into a sand stone and fabric. The burnt tree left its remains in purple resin, the remains of the vine teach its history, and the knots that had died inside the tree are now visible.

About the artist

Dalila Gonçalves (Castelo de Paiva, 1982) has a degree in Fine Arts-Painting (2005). Master in Visual Arts Teaching (2009) from FBAUP and FPCEUP (University of Porto 2009). In 2008 she was selected for the II edition of the Photography Course of the Gulbenkian Program of Creativity and Artistic Creation. Between 2010 and 2011 he worked in Barcelona in the studio of the artist Ignasi Aballí as a member of the Inov-art program. She shows regularly in institutions and galleries in different countries in Europe and South America. The exhibitions at the CCB, Centro Cultural de Belém, Lisboa (2019) stand out; Alcobendas Arts Center, Madrid (2018); the Fondation Hippcréne and Centrequatre in Paris (2017); in Tabacalera, Madrid (2016); in the Archipelago, Center of Contemporary Art, Azores (2015); at the Anozero’15 Contemporary Art Biennial, Coimbra (2015); at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisbon); at the Conservera Contemporary Art Center, Murcia, (2014); at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Roskilde (Denmark); SUBTE Center, Montevideo (2014); Triennale Beufort04 in Belgium; Play to 3 Bands, Madrid (2012 and 2015); at the Vila Flôr Cultural Center, Guimarães (2011-2016); Open Garden, Gardens of the Belém Palace, Lisbon (2007); Anticipart and Young Creators, Lisbon (2006).

She has has her work represented at Arco Madrid fairs (project only); ArteRio, SPArte (project only); ArtBO; MACO zone; ArtLima; Vienna Artfair; Artissima; and Untitled Miami, amongst other fairs.
